Gen Z youth in the small nation of Timor-Leste led demonstrations in response to a controversial proposal to purchase expensive SUV vehicles for members of the national legislature, a $4.2M expense. Protests were concentrated in the nation’s capital, Dili, and demonstrators were met with tear gas from police. In addition to the in-person protests, Timor-Leste Gen Z youth were active on social media discussing social issues and coordinating protests. In compliance with the protesters’ demands, lawmakers announced they would revoke the vehicle purchase proposal as well as rescinding lifetime pensions provided to members of the legislative body.
