Movement Description

Duration: September 2025

Viral social media posts authored by children of Nepali public officials sparked concerns from Nepali Gen Z youth in 2025. Posts showed the children of public officials enjoying privileges, leading to the creation of the hashtag #nepokids, which questioned how officials financed their children’s lavish lifestyles. As questions of corruption reached a larger audience, the Nepali government announced its ban of several social media platforms, leading to large in-person protests throughout Nepal. Following days of protests that saw the burning of the nation’s parliament building and 76 protesters killed, Nepal’s prime minister resigned and Gen Z youth elected their interim government via Discord, an online chat forum.
