Peru
Gen Z-led protests against a mandated pension program escalated after police violence and helped drive the impeachment of Peru’s president.
Duration: September–October 2025
In September 2025, Peruvian government officials introduced a mandated pension program that required all citizens over 18 to pay 10% of their income into the pension. The regulations were deeply unpopular and ignited Gen Z-led protests. In-person protests were met by police who used tear gas and rubber bullets. The use of force was documented on social media, further fueling demonstrations. Following the protests, Peru’s Congress voted to impeach the incumbent president. The Peruvian congressman who assumed the presidency in accordance with constitutional procedure was met with additional protests, but were met with police force, effectively dispersing protests.
