Movement Description

Duration: November 2025–Ongoing as of January 2026

Following the introduction of a controversial budget plan, Bulgarian Gen Z youth spearheaded protests across the nation. The protests came after government corruption sanctioned by the international community and ahead of the nation’s transition to the euro. Social media played a critical role in the protest, mobilizing thousands of Gen Z youth, many who had not been politically active prior, and helped coordinate protests of tens of thousands of people with at least one exceeding 100,000 in attendance. In response to the pressure from protesters, the budget was withdrawn and Bulgaria’s prime minister resigned. As of early 2026, protests continue as demonstrators call for an early national election.
