Movement Description

Duration: August–September 2025

Indonesian Gen Z youth staged protests in 2025 in response to the introduction of a housing allowance increase for members of the country’s national legislative body. The proposal came amidst widespread job insecurity, particularly among Gen Z youth, and was met with in-person protests. The demonstrations escalated following police running a man over during protests, leading to an influx of in-person protests that saw a number of instances of arson targeting government buildings. After pressure from the protests, the Indonesian government revoked the previously instated housing allowances, ending the protests that saw 8–10 protesters killed and 4,000 people arrested.
