Protests in Tanzania began surrounding national elections in 2025. The incumbent leader, whose party has ruled the country for over 60 years, claimed victory in the presidential elections with 98% of the vote. Internet suppression and violent force were used by Tanzanian security forces, with incidents of violence even spilling into Kenyan border towns. With little transparency available, death count figures varied dramatically, with some United Nations officials, who condemned the violence, stating that at least 700 Tanzanians were killed in the suppression.
