Movement Description

Duration: October 2020

The #EndSARS movement began in 2020 to protest police brutality committed by the specialized police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), in Nigeria. Documentation of abuses committed by SARS officers were widely spread on social media, stoking outrage and fueling in-person protests. Demonstrations were crushed by police and military violence that led to disputed figures of people killed by security forces, with leaked reports suggesting 56 people were killed, though accurate numbers have not been confirmed. The Nigerian government claimed the disbanding of the SARS unit in response to protests, but many Nigerians and advocacy groups believe the change is in name only.
