Movement Description

Duration: Phase 1: June–August 2024, Phase 2: June–July 2025

In 2024, the Kenyan government introduced the largest tax increases in the nation’s history. Mobilizing against the proposal, Kenyans staged nationwide protests and participated in social media-based discourse. Following pressure from protests, the tax increase included in the national Finance Bill was withdrawn. Protests resumed in 2025 following the death of a man in police custody arrested after criticizing authorities. 2025 protests were met with violence from police, with 31 deaths and more than 500 arrests during demonstrations. The United Nations has called for a full investigation of the use of force.
